Because government agencies must maintain the highest levels of security and accessibility throughout their organization, many have chosen to adopt Apple products due to their interoperability, ease of use, manageability, mobility and industry-leading security features. Join Apple at GTEC on October 5th and 6th in the Maple Room, for daily presentations. Building iOS Applications - A How-to for Government Departments We'll discuss and demonstrate Apple's software development tools for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, and show how individuals and institutions are building innovative mobile applications for their organizations and the wider world. We'll highlight and deconstruct some popular applications - both webbased, and native - and show you how to get started building your own with Apple's free developer tools. We'll show off interesting new capabilities of the latest iOS 4 operating system, and talk about web development with Dashcode, native application development with Xcode and Interface Builder, and review the integration and deployment options and Apple's developer program. And if the presenter messes up, we may accidentally wind up demonstrating the debugger as well. Arming Yourself in the Wild World of Mobile Computing Tuesday, Oct 5th - 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM & Wednesday, Oct 6th - 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM Applications and system services must be built on solid, security-focused foundations. Operating Systems must have security built in from the ground up and not have it bolted on as an afterthought. No single operating system service is a silver bullet and this is why Apple continues its layered defense approach in protecting user systems from the potential disasters in the wild world of mobile computing. We'll take a look at Apple's attention to detail and integrated services which allow for both protection without administration as well as enhanced management to meet corporate security policies. The 3 Keys to integrating Mac OS X in your Department Many government organizations are adopting Apple solutions to help them meet today's challenges— harnessing innovations such as the world's only notebooks that can simultaneously run Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, and Linux operating systems. Join us and see why many large organizations are increasingly integrating Macs into their infrastructure. We will review interoperability, management and security of Mac OS X, and give you some ideas on how to get started evaluating the Mac platform for your Department. DESKTOP MODERNIZATION The last 10 years have seen sweeping changes to how we live and work. With the emergence of near ubiquitous, mobile access to data networks, participation-driven applications and hosted, centralized data storage, the modern workforce expects to be able to be productive anywhere, anytime. . As enterprises struggle with the challenge of opening up their systems to this new form of anywhere, anytime access, they must simultaneously contend with security concerns, internal policies, challenges of operating in remote regions where bandwidth is very limited and cost constraints. Maplesoft's Desktop Modernization Practice provides enterprises with the agility to provide their stakeholders with the anywhere, anytime access they require while maintaining strong security, enforcing policy and dealing with disconnected access. RESCUE LEGACY APPS WITH SOA Service Oriented Architecture is fast becoming a business necessity to survive in this competitive world. This type of IT architecture describes a collection of services that can inter-communicate in a loosely coupled, event-driven model based on web services. With SOA, organizations are able to leverage existing applications and infrastructure and provide a data bridge between incompatible technologies, while reducing reliance on expensive custom development. Ultimately this will lower the costs associated with the acquisition and maintenance of technology, while allowing an organization to more quickly meet customer demands. Maplesoft’s Application Developmet Practice recognizes that implementing Service Oriented Architecture needs to be accomplished within the context of lower costs and greater efficiencies. At the same time we recommend 100% standards-based, best-in-class technologies with a proven track record for high-volume, mission-critical business applications. Oracle Service Bus, combined with Oracle’s renowned scalability, is lightweight SOA integration platform that allows you to quickly connect, mediate, and manage interactions between heterogeneous services, legacy applications, and packaged COTS applications. UPGRADE TO ORACLE 11G Government Departments have their business requirements impacted by the constantly increasing cost of data growth and aging backend database software. Leveraging the tenfold performance improvements and compression capabilities of Oracle 11g helps to not only save growing hardware and storage costs, but also allows for increased system security, memory efficiency, and availability. Outside of the benefits of core functionality like table scanning and read queries, which not only allow for speed improvements and reductions in bandwidth, Oracle 11g can provide massive savings on the raw cost of storage with advanced compression that allows for de-duplication and reduction in dump file size and backup data. Combining this with Exadata allows for unparalleled performance improvements with the benefits of flash storage for caching queries, fewer CPUs for processing, resulting in an appliance that delivers petabytes of data at a million I/O’s per second per rack over its InfiniBand backend network. This provides a sound business case for short return on investment with a go forward strategy involving assessment, planning, and implementation of these key upgrades.
